Air conditioning noise
By Airva Editorial Team · Reviewed by Airva Technical Review · Updated 13 July 2026
Modern home air conditioning is much quieter than many people expect. Indoor units are designed for living spaces and bedrooms; on low settings they produce a soft background sound.
Indoor and outdoor sound
- Indoor unit — quiet enough for a bedroom on its lower fan speeds.
- Outdoor unit — produces a low hum; the key is placement. Siting the outdoor unit away from windows and boundaries keeps it unobtrusive for you and neighbours.
Keeping it quiet
- Choose a well-rated unit and the right size for the room.
- Position the outdoor unit thoughtfully.
- Use lower fan speeds overnight.
An installer will advise on expected sound levels for your rooms. Request an installer match.
